Is gardening with tires bad for the environment? I have read many articles that suggest using old tires for container gardening. My father is considering making a vegetable garden out of tires. Does the tire pollute the soil and there fore the vegetables? I it is bad to burn tires.. Should I be concerned about the quality of the vegetables? Have you seen any scientific evidence about this topic? Or environmental tests?
Gardening according to the phases of the moon, has anyone any experience? I saw something about it on tv the other day and have read a little about it before. Does anyone have any experience, does it make a difference or is it coincidence? From my own experience, I find most things are reluctant to grow after June, when the days start getting shorter. I've never tried gardening by moon phases, I tend to go by the phases of the sun rather than the moon, but thought of trying it out this year just for fun.
How to get savvy with gardening? Every time I buy a houseplant or look something up that's related to any kind of gardening I get completely lost in all the terminology, latin names, etc. I'd like to get better at gardening and growing things without having to get my degree in horticulture. Are there any sources (websites/books) for beginners who don't understand all the "big words" ?
Gardening vegetarians and vegans: what sort of fertilizer do you use? I'm new to gardening and I'm using liquid seaweed for my tomatoes. People at the gardening centers have been telling me I won't get awesome tomatoes without using blood meal/bone meal. Have you used seaweed? What do you use? I would really love to be composting, but I live in a one-room apartment that's smaller than my childhood bedroom. I'm trying to garden on my huge, south-facing windowsill. We'll see how it goes.
How do I create a flower garden around a tree? I am a beginner in gardening and planting? I have an old tree in front of my home. I like to add a flower bed around the tree, but I am new to planting and gardening. Also, my lawn needs a lot of care. Last year my husband tilled part of our lawn and we replanted new grass, but our lawn looks very unhealty with a lot of try, burned like spots. What can I do to have a healthy lawn, and how do I go about creating my flower bed around the tree. I like to put a border around the tree like a small wall maybe. I want the flower bed be higher than the actual lawn. We have mostly clay dirt. Can you give me some advice and/or help. Thanks.
How does someone become an expert on Gardening, get certified and make it a career? I am interested in turning my small time hobby of gardening into a bit of a career. Are there classes, certifications, training that I can take in order to become an expert on plants, trees, etc? I'd like to have a deep knowledge of the various kinds of trees, shrubs, flowers that work in different climates, how to best plant and maintain them, to design landscapes with a variety of well-coordinated plants, etc. Should I try to become a certified arborist? Where do I start exploring this potential new career direction? Thanks.

This is our first time growing a garden, any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.
How do you keep fingernails clean when gardening? Does anyone have any "Martha" tips on how to keep nails from looking like an auto mechanics when you are an avid gardener? Martha Stewart suggested to put rubber gloves under gardening gloves, but they make your hands sweat badly! Or, how best to clean "gardener's hands?" Thanks!
How do I find gardening instructions? I recently learned how to turn on a computer and I need advise of where the best gardening tips are for my yard gardening. I am trying to grow tomatoes, squash, peppers, melons, onions, etc.
What is your favorite gardening site for flowers? I don't know much about gardening. I've lived in apartments all my life, and I still do... but my landlord is letting me play with a patch of land outside my kitchen window. I live near Salt Lake City, UT. The weather looks like it might be spring. so... what is the URL of a gardening site that has helped you? Any sites good for beginners?
How can I protect myself and daughter while gardening in the yard? Besides insect repellent lotions or sprays. Is there anything further I should use to minimize insect bites? Mosquitoes are ramped in my area. And now that the weather is getting warmer, I'd like to some pruning and gardening. Is there anything additional I should do to protect myself and dear daughter?
How do I begin a new veg/heb garden in an already estabished gardening bed? I just bought a house with great gardening beds. The only issue is I'm new to gardening and would like to get rid all the plants currently growing there to add new ones. I'd like to pot the rosemary instead of having it on the bed because it seems so invasive. The tomato plants seem to be done for the season. Do I pull them? There are also strawberries, thyme, and others I have no idea what they are.

What should I do about flirty neighbor that flashes me while gardening? She always shows up in my yard while I am gardening. She wears loose tops and bends over in front of me so that I can see her breasts. She never is wearing a bra either. It is having an effect on me now, how do I handle? We are both married and I know flirting. She is flirting with me, she fancies me. My wife even picked up on this. My problem is she is very attractive and my temptation is growing. An attractive woman really knows how to work it and make perfectly good husband have nasty thoughts.
What do you think would be a good logo for a gardening services company? My other half is setting up a gardening services company and we're currently looking at what his company logo should look like. It'll be on advertising leaflets, business cards , a website and possibly on his pick up truck. We've done a dragonfly design so far but was wondering if anyone had any good ideas. We want to portray that he's reliable ,efficient, knowledgeable in plants and horiculture and can take on work pople just don't have time for.
What "product" would you like/expect to receive from a gardening consultant? I would like to take jobs as a gardening or landscaping consultant, working with homeowners as clients. I do not want to take measurements/draw landscape plans. That takes too much time outside of the meeting/appointment. I feel many people just want to pick my brain and ask questions anyway. But I feel I need to leave them with something, written notes, a list of plants, etc. I want them to feel they got their money's worth. What would comprise a good product? I'd like to make up a form or sheet to use.
Should I wait for flower gardening or can I start now? I live in TN. So, far we have had about 2 weeks of warm weather (60s & 70s) before spring even set in. Last year, our winter ended right around this time also unlike past decade where cold weather ( < 60F) would last through April. So, should I wait a little longer or can I go ahead and start my flower gardening now?
What do people charge for gardening services? I'm thinking of setting up my own gardening business. What's the going rate for mowing, weeding, clearing, planting, pruning, laying paths and patios, installing sheds, decking, fencing, outdoor lights, ponds etc?
GaRDENING>>>>>>>? My fiance and I recently moved into our first home. Our grass has finally begun to come up and we were wondering about some ideas on what to plant. We both have full time jobs and not alot of time to work in the garden. Any suggestions? (I really like my yard to be colorful). And if you do have suggestions, could you please give me a step-by-step run-down of how to plant and take care of them?
Any recommendations on raised beds for gardening? I'd like to install a raised bed for vegetable gardening this year. I think this will allow me more control over the soil quality. What's the cheapest and easiest way to go about it? Should I buy one of the ready-made beds available online? In case I wasn't clear, the soil is not my concern, it's the actual bed itself. Should I try to build one, or buy one that snaps together?

Is anyone else addicted to hay bale gardening? If you are hay bale gardening, tell me what plants are working for you and what plants aren't. Do you have any helpful tips about hay bale gardening? I started doing this 3 years ago and I love it! It is so much easier than regular gardening. You're further off the ground, there are far fewer weeds and pests, it takes less water, you don't have to "till" and the old hay turns into compost when you're done! Thanks!
Where can I find some good resources on gardening and/or greenhouses? I'm especially interested in learning greenhouse and gardening techniques that aren't expensive to maintain after the initial setup costs. I would be in a colder climate with 500-10,000 dollars to invest. Its a relaxing activity I think I'd enjoy that could pay off as fuel and energy costs continue to rise. I'm especially interested in websites or books you think might help me out. Thanks!

What tools do I need to know to start a landscape and gardening design business? Years ago I worked in a amateur way in gardening maintenance. I realice that I liked it a lot but I don't have the specific knoledge and experience to start a landscape and gardening design business. I have the feeling that I have the creativity for doing this but of course this is not all. Could someone help me telling me the kind of tools that I would require to start this gradually? Maybe I would requiere to know some landscape design software, etc. In short, what kind of tools would be necesary to have and learn. Maybe the thing would be more complex like doing an Business plan? I'll thank any advice. Chris

In gardening, what is the meaning of "deadheading" a flower? I was reading an article about container gardening and it reads: "Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer, and deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep them blooming." Are we just talking about getting rid of the old flowers? Or is there any particular way you have to cut the flowers in order to encourage more blooms? Thanks!
Does anyone know of any good gardening help websites? Im looking for some great gardening websites. Ones with specific help with flowers. And not hgtv.com, and common ones that are well known. Ones that you may have come across that are real informative on flowers. Thanks!

gardening???????????? My girlfriend and I are wanting to plant a small garden (maybe 6x8). We would like to plant some corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, bannana peppers, strawberries and some cantalope. It's more of just something to do, but we are gonna eat the vegetables. My question is this: Can all these plants grow in the same type of soil? Are there any precautions that need to be taken? Is it too late to plant any of this stuff? We live in lower Michigan. Any helpful hints are appreciated.

In brainstorming ideas of what to do, I thought of doing a garden with them. However, their parents rent a home and don't have a very large yard, so we can't have one in the ground. What are some plants that can handle living and producing in pots? I want to do veggies or flowers that can be cut- things that they can take pride in having grown. Help????? My thumb is more black than green...
Gardening? What characteristics should soil have in order to have a blooming garden?

What should I grow//I want to grow vegetables... So suggest some? And how should I go about this? I really don't know haha =] Thanks.
Gardening??? There's an article on the internet that says grass cuttings provide all the nutrients that plants need without any other fertilizers. Is anybody experienced in growing vegetables with grass cuttings only (please state dry grass or fresh grass)?
Has gardening technology we use today veering us off the real meaning of gardening? I believe so because the point of gardening is to spend a day outside with nature; free from the busy stressful world. Its about getting your hands a little dirty and the good feeling that you have planted life in your very backyard. It's getting that feeling inside yourself that "Hey, I planted this beautiful garden all myself". Its also about being physically and mentally fit. But these days new tools have been made to make gardening less of a "birden". There are tools that allow you to pluck weeds with out bending down to do it yourself. There's also this thing where it rolls out onto the dirt with seeds in it so all you have to do is water it and watch the flowers grow. That's not really gardening at all; it's just buying your an already made garden where as you can plant yourself to have a custom made garden. As I've sais before, gardening is about getting yourself some self confidence and getting a little dirty. But these days the technologies are veering us off that real meaning
gardening club? Has anyone been to the National home gardening club website? If you are interested in gardening they have a great ch@t and forum, gardening ideas and more. I am interested in gardening and have tried the Yahoo gardening chat room and it was full of middle eastern guys trying to pick me up and girls trying to get me to look at thier pics. I guess I am nieve, I thought someone might want to talk about gardening on there. So if your lookin for somewhere to check out, try this site... what the heck is hortchat?
Gardening in the NE US? I am thinking way ahead for my gardens next year. I would like some reccomendations from people living and gardening in the North East (southern New England) on some hardy plants. I would like to know some good species for a butterfly/hummingbird garden. I already have a few plants that attract them: butterfly bush, zinnias, salvia, daises, coral bells, lavender, begonias and a bleeding heart. These are the plants that I have seen the butterflies and hummingbirds on. I would like to expand the garden and attract more and different species throughout the spring, summer and early fall. I would also like reccommendations for evergreens, preferably with berries or leaves that change colors (to red in fall, for example) and some reccommendations for good cutting plants. I know that's alot, thank you in advance!
A few gardening questions...? I have been educating myself through here, other sites, magazines, & books on gardening. One of my main interests is attracting butterflies & hummingbirds. I read in a mag. article that if you have bats near by they are also good for your garden as they will eat those night time insects & pests that come to check out your garden. In this article on bats is says that if you plant nectoring flowers that insects go nuts over that the bats will eat them. So, since I want to attract hummingbirds & butterflies who are attracted to nectoring flowers, will the bats eat them, or are they safe since they are daytimers? Besides flowers, we are also going to do some veggies and fruits. We live near a field, & nature preserves are really close so we get all kinds of creatures. What is a sure way to keep my garden from these guys without hurting them or my garden? I heard that planting veggies with and aluminum can (with both top & bottom taken off) around the roots will do this, is this true? THNX
Gardening Club in Covent Garden? Does anyone know if the Gardening Club in Covent Garden is a good place for a birthday party on the weekend? I want it to be not too expensive, with a decent sized area I can reserve, and hopefully not quite as horribly packed as most clubs are on Saturday nights in central London!!
Do You Find Gardening To Be Relaxing? Some people claim gardening is therapeutic. Is this true? I've never had the opportunity to garden before, but my grandfather has a flower and vegetable garden, and he absolutely loves being outside gardening. As a matter of fact, that's where he spends the majority of his day. Do those of you that garden, feel the same way?
Gardening 101 ? I want to start a garden this year and grow some veggies, but also plant some flowers and stuff too. But Ive no idea how or where to start. we were thinking of building a raised bed for the veggies, but I'm not sure how big yet. maybe 4x8 or 4x16? Could anyone recommend some good websites with lots of information for someone who has never done any gardening before? I need to get some ideas what to plant with what and when to start and stuff like that. I'd like to do this garden as natural as possible, with out using any chemicals or anything. Where thinking of making a compost bin as well, so any information on that would be helpful too thanks!
Gardening over concrete- is it possible to be successful? If so, how please? I am a very new gardener- I've only grown tomatoes in pots before. The house I am in is on a main street, (so no front garden) but we do have a concreted back yard in a sort of T shape. I wondered if there was some way of gardening ie raised beds, on the concreted area, so I could grow veggies and perhaps some flowers if possible. Or should I just give it up as a bad idea? There is no way we could get rid of the concrete unfortunately. We are in Scotland, and the garden faces NE. (But doesn't get a lot of sun due to the large building next door) Thank you in advance
Gardening in Calgary AB? It's almost time to start thinking about gardening... I'd like to plant veggies in my garden outdoors. I've heard that Calgary weather is not very good for many veggies (and fruits like tomatoes). I need some advice on what I can plant here. I'd like carrots, squash, peas, pole beans... what works here (I have south and west facing gardens and walls to plant against. Thanks!
Gardening in Florida? How is gardening in FL? We're thinking of a move to central FL and I like to have a vegetable garden. Obviously citrus does well, but is it possible to have a decent vegetable garden? What types of things grow well there?
Gardening Help? Hi. (: I'm just fairly new to gardening and I have a few questions before I go planting without knowing a few basic things... 1. What are nutrients essential for all kinds of plants? I know the three basics: sunlight, water and soil, but are there any hidden, organic materials you can add to better keep the plant sustained? 2. How deep the seeds should be in the soil? I might plant it too deep that it won't shoot up the soil or too high that they won't survive the heat at their "growing stages". :\ 3. What are good gardening websites, magazines, publications, etc. I can go to that has a lot to say about everything gardening? 4. What are good protection for plants without resorting to pesticides from bugs? Also, during weekends, I'm idle and away from my home so what ways can I keep my plants sustained, growing and protected? 5. What are good tropical plants (since I'm in a tropical region) that grow fast and can withstand enormous amounts of rain? Tnx 2 any1 answering my questions! :]
Gardening Tools have been have been robbed on several occasions, yesterday Garage brken into??? WE're so tired ot it. Now they stole our tools again and this time they stole them out of the locked garage. They broke the piece of metal that held the Lock. And we are all asleep here at 10:00pm or by 12:00pm.. so they usually come at 2 , 3 or 4 i guess. What can we do to stop these crooks?? Last time we called the police, this time too. But they keep coming. And it's been like a year since we got robbed the last time. SO it's kind of impossible to know when they are going to try it again. I could stay up all night and never sleep and check.. but that's unrealistic. What can we do? WE're not rich actually. There's many semi wealthy Americans around this neighborhood, but we are hispanic and my father does labor ( gardening).. but they always steal his expensive gardening tools. So today we have to spend 500 Plus to buy gardening equipment just so we can do the job. aaaarrgh.. why us? what can we do? Now the garage door will be open cause the lock mechanism is broken
Brand new to gardening...Help!? I am brand new to gardening. My husband rented a tiller and tilled up a spot to put our veggie garden. We bought seeds for bell peppers, sugar snap peas, tomatoes, cucumber, and yellow squash. I call my mother to tell her about it and she said we need to start it inside first, then move it outside to the garden. My hubby says we can plant the seeds directly in the garden. Can we? Any other advice to help our garden? Thanks!

Is there a gardening tool like a hoover that I can use in my garden to suck up sand? I live near the coast and during high winds, well any winds really, I get loads of sand blown into my garden. Because it's then classed as contaminated sand i.e. contaminated with soil and stuff, I have to get rid of it myself, which is very time consuming when I could just be enjoying my garden. I'm wondering if there is any gardening tool, like a leaf blower I suppose, which can be used to suck up sand and leaves etc, which I can then empty in the bin. It would need to be available for purchase in the UK or at least via the net.

I also bought a pack of 65 bulbs for spring planting, summer blooming- says its a garden in a bag... heres whats in it -20 glad bulbs -12 sparaxis -3 dahlias -12 acidantheras -8 iris -10 anemones What I wanted to do is plant the pansies in the front of my flower bed, and plant the bulbs in the back, so when the pansies fade with the hot weather, the bulbs will be grown and flowering. The area I am working with is 14" wide, 10 feet long, then another of the same area on the other side of our front steps. I want to plant the dahlias in a large pot on our front steps, since we don't use the front door. DO you think this will work, and do you have any further ideas for me to work with (placement of the bulbs, etc)... I just want colour in front of our boring bland white house!!!
gardening/landscaping gloves? I recently started working part-time, doing gardening/landscaping work. I purchased a pair of Wells Lamont "leather palm" gloves, which were SUPPOSED to be high-quality. I used the gloves yesterday for the first time, and within 20 minutes, the right-hand glove had a large hole ripped in the middle finger. I was only pulling weeds, and there weren't even any thorny plants or sharp objects. I couldn't stop working, so I just wore the gloves as is. I have emailed the Wells Lamont people, and complained in a very civil way (I have not yet heard from them). What do you recommend as the best, sturdiest brand of work gloves for gardening/landscaping work? The ones I bought only cost about $5, and I'd certainly be willing to pay more for better quality.

Gardening in the South - Website? I've recently taken an interrest in gardening, and will be landscaping my entire front and back yard. I wish to grow all kinds of things, from fruit trees to bushes to flowers to vegetables and vines. I was hoping to find an informative website that is easy to navigate about gardening in the south, Alabama specifically. Any suggestions? Also, I am on dial-up, so a simple text and photo website, without alot of extra crap to load, is preferred...
Gardening Help! ~ Looking for perennials for Zones 8a ~ 8b.? I soooo do not have a green thumb! I don't even have a yellow thumb... However, I do have a spot in the front of my house that is absolutely screaming for some flowers and I'm determined that Gardening is going to be on my list of 2008 resolutions... So, what I need... I am looking for good cutting flowers; Iris, Daffodil, Tulip or the like for a space that gets ALOT of direct sunlight. Drainage is fair but can be improved. I would prefer, to begin with, not to have to deal with bulbs that have to be dug-up every year. I have asked around at several of the local gardening centers and haven't really found anyone who could adequately answer my questions. I live right on the edge of Zones 8a & 8b, or more to the point, on the very eastern edge of Williamson County, TX. About 20 miles northeast of Austin. Thanks!
In which countries are garden centres (and gardening) popular? Which countries around the world have lots of gardening centres? There are certainly plenty in my native England, because there are so many keen gardeners. Where else would I expect to see garden centres, and gardens that the householders look after?

Landscaping and Gardening Jobs? hey guys whats up, Well I'm out to start a tiny business doing Landscaping and Gardening. I'm only 17yrs old preparing for Senior year and will be the only worker. I was wondering how much to charge people for my services and how to get alot of work (like how to get people to hire me and how to get more people). I was thinking about making business cards and creating a small website so people can view who I am, what im about, and what i charge. But when i do get jobs how much should I charge? I'll be more into Mowing, Edging, and that stuff...(like gardening...without the garden)... Should certain jobs be higher paid than others? should i charge a flat rate $X/hr fee for any or everything i do I was considering adding other jobs (that arent necassarily 'landscaping' whatev) like car washes/waxing (with real car wash soaps) garage/attic/basement cleaning. window cleaning and anything else in reach. to sum it up: a. how to get work (and alot of it) b. how much should I charge -Thank
